Shads and swimbaits are among the most reliable soft plastic lures for predator fishing. They imitate a naturally swimming baitfish – the primary prey of most predators – and work year-round, whether retrieved slowly or actively. The question is not whether they will work, but which type to choose based on depth, fish activity, and conditions.

In this category, you will find classic paddle tail shads for universal use, as well as swimbaits and weedless system soft plastics designed for snags, structure, and demanding conditions.

Basic categorization of soft plastic lures

Shads (paddle tail) – universal use

• Paddle tail shads form the foundation of modern lure fishing and are also the best-selling type of soft plastic lures. The working tail creates a natural movement even during a very slow retrieve, but it also handles fast water searching. They work all year round and at all depths.
• A major advantage is their versatility – you can fish them on a jig head, weightless, on an offset hook, drop shot, and other rigs. If you were to have just one category of soft plastics to cover most situations, it would be shads.
